If your business isn't showing up on Google Maps, it's almost always one of seven fixable reasons: an unverified or incomplete Google Business Profile, being too far from the searcher, inconsistent name-address-phone details, too few reviews, the wrong primary category, or a suspended or duplicate listing — and sometimes the profile is simply too new. Here's how to fix each.

Why you're missingThe fix
Profile not verifiedComplete Google's verification
Incomplete profileFill every field: categories, hours, photos
Too far from the searcherSet your service areas
Inconsistent name/address/phoneUse one exact format everywhere

1. You haven't verified your Google Business Profile

This is the number-one cause, full stop. You can't appear on Google Maps without a verified Google Business Profile. Not "created" — verified. If you never completed Google's verification (usually a video or postcard), your business simply isn't eligible to show. Start at google.com/business and finish verification. Our Google Business Profile tips walk through it.

2. Your profile is incomplete

A bare-bones profile ranks like one. Google rewards complete, active profiles: the right categories, services, hours, photos, and a real description. Half-finished profiles get buried. Fill in every field — it's free, and it's the cheapest ranking boost you'll ever get.

3. You're too far from the searcher (distance)

Google Maps results are personalized by proximity — how close you are to the person searching. If you're across town, you may not show for their "near me" search even if your profile is great. You can't move your business, but if you're a service-area business, you can (and must) set your service areas so Google knows the whole territory you cover.

4. Your name, address, and phone don't match across the web

Google cross-checks your business details against directories, your website, Facebook, Yelp, and more. If your phone number or business name is formatted differently in different places, it erodes Google's confidence and your ranking. Pick one exact format for your name, address, and phone — and use it everywhere, identically.

5. You have too few reviews

Reviews are one of the strongest map-pack ranking signals, and a brand-new profile with zero reviews rarely cracks the top three. A steady stream of recent, genuine reviews tells Google you're an active, trusted business. If you're stuck, start here: how to get more Google reviews.

6. Your primary category is wrong or missing

Your primary category is the single biggest factor in which searches you appear for. If a plumber is categorized as "Handyman," they'll miss most plumbing searches. Choose the most specific primary category that matches what you do, then add relevant secondary categories.

7. Your listing is suspended or duplicated

Two silent killers: a suspended profile (often from keyword-stuffing your business name — e.g. "Joe's Plumbing Mobile AL Best Plumber" instead of "Joe's Plumbing") and duplicate listings competing with each other. Use your real business name, and if you spot duplicates, ask Google to merge or remove them.

Still not showing? It might just be new

If you recently verified everything, give it time. New profiles take days to a few weeks to appear, and climbing into the top three takes longer as reviews and consistency build. The work compounds — but only once the seven items above are handled.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to show up on Google Maps after creating a profile?

Once you've completed verification, a new profile usually appears within a few days to a couple of weeks. Ranking well in the top-three map pack takes longer — it builds as you add reviews, keep the profile active, and make your business details consistent across the web.

Why does my business show up on Maps for me but not for my customers?

Google personalizes Maps results by your location and account, so you often see your own business when others don't. To check your true ranking, search in an incognito window, or use a tool that checks rankings from different points around your service area.

Do I need a physical address to show up on Google Maps?

No. Service-area businesses that visit customers (contractors, consultants, agencies) can appear on Maps without displaying a public address — you still enter one for verification, then hide it and set your service areas instead.
